What is EPEAT™?

EPEAT is a procurement tool designed to help purchasers in the public and private sectors evaluate, compare and select electronic products (currently desktop and notebook/laptop computers and monitors) based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT's name is derived from the acronym for the "Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool"

Why is a "green" procurement tool for electronics needed?

The development of EPEAT was prompted by a growing demand among institutional purchasers for an easy-to-use evaluation tool to enable the comparison and selection of electronic products based on environmental performance. The electronics industry welcomed EPEAT as a tool that provides a clear and consistent set of environmental criteria for the design of products, and creates an opportunity to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of products.

How did the EPEAT project come about?

The participants in the Western Electronic Product Stewardship Initiative (WEPSI), which took place in 2001 through 2002, proposed that methods be explored to provide a marketplace reward for products that embody superior environmental attributes. A WEPSI subcommittee suggested that a credible method to assess the environmental attributes of electronic products could help public procurement officials select the most environmentally preferable products and could, thereby, provide a market incentive for their development. That recommendation formed the basis for a grant (in the form of a cooperative agreement) to Zero Waste Alliance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 10 office to develop the assessment tool.

What is the EPEAT lifecycle environmental criterion?

EPEAT’s stringent environmental criteria were developed with U.S. EPA support through a three-year stakeholder process that involved private and public purchasers; environmental advocates; computer and component manufacturers; federal, state, and local governments; computer recyclers; and technical researchers. The EPEAT criteria were adopted by the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers as IEEE Standard 1680 through an ANSI-accredited process.

What are the current EPEAT standards?

The EPEAT standard includes 51 environmental performance criteria — 23 required and 28 optional — in the following eight categories:

• Reduction/Elimination of Environmentally Sensitive Materials
• Materials Selection
• Design for End-of-Life
• Energy Conservation
• Life Cycle Extension
• End-of-Life Management
• Corporate Performance
• Packaging

EPEAT provides three levels of recognition for products—Bronze, Silver and Gold—based on the number of optional criteria they meet on top of the 23 required criteria. This gives manufacturers incentives to continually improve their products’ environmental performance, and allows purchasers to aim progressively higher in greening successive product selections.

What are the Environmental Benefits?

Compared to conventional computer equipment, all EPEAT-registered computer products contain reduced levels of cadmium, lead, and mercury to better protect human health and the environment. They are more energy efficient, which saves money and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. They are also easier to upgrade and recycle, and manufacturers must offer institutional purchasers take back and recycling services for any model registered under EPEAT.

2008 US purchases of EPEAT registered laptops, desktops, and monitors over conventional products will:

• Reduce use of toxic materials, including mercury, by 1021 metric tons, equivalent to the weight of 510,949 bricks
• Eliminate use of enough mercury to fill 149,685 household fever thermometers
• Preclude the disposal of 43 thousand metric tons of hazardous waste, equivalent to the weight of almost 22 million bricks.
• Eliminate 14,353 Metric Tons of solid waste, equivalent to the amount 7202 U.S. households generate in a year

In addition, due to EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet ENERGY STAR’s energy efficiency specifications, these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

• Savings of over 8.39 billion kWh of electricity — enough to power over 700,000 US homes for a year
• Reduction in use of 14.8 million metric tons of primary materials, equivalent to the weight of more than 114 million refrigerators
• Avoidance of 34.2 million metric tons of air emissions (including greenhouse gas emissions) and over 71,000 metric tons of water pollutant emissions
• Reduction of over 1.57 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions — equivalent to taking over one million US passenger cars off the road for a year

In addition to these benefits, reported global sales demonstrate EPEAT’s potential for reducing the environmental costs of computing worldwide. Despite only 27% of participating manufacturers reporting their Canadian EPEAT sales and only 20% reporting their Rest of World sales, the estimated benefit of EPEAT sales to these regions is still significant:

• Reduction of 2.8 million metric tons of primary materials
• Elimination of over a million kilograms of toxic materials, including enough mercury to fill 157,311 household fever thermometers
• 16,297 Metric Tons of solid waste eliminated Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 2.3 million US cars from the road for a year
